Communicating with the Public - A report on research into the vocabulary used by people throughout the UK

Research for the report analyses nearly a million words of everyday conversation among people in different socio-economic groups and geographic regions of the UK. It investigates the source language of the vocabulary used, focussing on differences between words chosen by professional communicators and those used by the public.

We analysed conversation involving 265 individuals in 34 groups. These samples were taken from the conversational part of the British National Corpus. They are based on recordings of normal two-way and multi-way conversations among families, friends, colleagues and acquaintances.
